Starchild
"Starchild" represents a deeply personal journey of hope, love and healing. In February 2018, a major turning point happened when Will’s wife had surgery to remove her thyroid due to a cancerous tumor. This led to early menopause and shifted their path to expanding their family. Rather than give up, they embraced the spirit of their hoped-for child—whom they named “Starchild.” Will painted “Starchild” as his way of processing this pivotal moment in their lives. We see the event symbolically depicted with a meteorite crashing through the child’s neck. "Starchild" lives on through the art to represent the bond between the couple and their hoped-for child.
As an ethereal being, “Starchild” has the unique ability to manifest as any pollinator found in our physical world, bridging the realms of nature and spirit. With that said, “Starchild” has been symbolized as the hummingbird often seen in Juniper Creative’s murals. As a character in The Afro-Pollinator series, “Starchild” is the younger brother of “Kelis the Afronaut,” and journeys alongside her planting seeds of joy in every corner they explore. Together, Kelis and Starchild illustrate the interconnectedness of all beings, encouraging us to nurture our bonds with each other and the environment.
“Starchild” also serves as a reminder of the innocence and potential of our youth. We must honor, respect , and nurture the younger generation as stewards of the future. In a world that often forgets to celebrate the innocence of youth, “Starchild” invites us to embrace their essence and recognize our shared responsibility in fostering a harmonious existence.
